The Night before Christmas

This is a five page short from DECAY No.20 2015 written by Myself and drawn by Carlos Angelli. There is a link to his other work on the right hand side of this blog.
I'm quite proud of this. Pat Mills of 2000AD fame even thought it was a nice piece. Refer here

OLD T SHIRT DESIGNS

Between 2007 and 2011 I was quite active on the art site Red Bubble, back before it became a major POD site for all things from phone cases to pillow cases it had a vibrant community. But back then it was mainly Australian residence flogging T shirts and photography. That doesn't say there wasn't any talent there, the opposite applies it was bursting at the seams of people who encouraged and inspired myself and others to do things you only dreamed about. It led me on path that 10 years ago I never thought I would tread down again.
This collection below is from my time on Red Bubble when I thought I could design any old T Shirt and post it. I never intended to sell any, I used the medium to show off my ill conceived ideas and talents. Heavily influenced by Banksy and 80s and 90s British comedies all these designs had a place in what was going on in my life at the time. Some even sold a few shirts.

Sons of Balaur

Sons of Balaur

A band that features in a recently released graphic novel has now been signed to a label and its characters are being portrayed by actual musicians so they can record and play live. The band is Sons of Balaur .The comic The Realm of the Damned- Tenebris Dios by writer Alec Worley and artist Pye Parr. I haven’t read the book yet, but plan to – it’s down my alley of interest- but it’s been lauded as a gory tale of bloodshed ,metal and more bloodshed. The ability to assemble musicians to play in character and be signed by a label seems to be part of a larger plan for the creative team as it has only just been released to the public.
Sounds a bit like Gorillaz?
Who knows but they're getting people interested.

This is the bands fictional biography:

SONS OF BALAUR are a true kult black metal band based in Oslo, Norway. Formed in March, 1992, the band were part of the original first wave of Norwegian black metal – a notorious inner circle of underground artists who took music to extremes it had never previously reached. Started in secret, for obvious reasons, the band features some of Norwegian black metal’s most dedicated and shadowy personalities: Tomas (vocals, guitar), Markus (bass), Kristoffer (guitar), and Lars (drums).

The band are true followers of the Dark Arts, and their songs are as much spells to the black forces of the underworld as they are music. The band’s recordings have been kept closely guarded within a tight-knit community of like-minded servants of the night, and remained unreleased in any official form until now. Their new album is an invocation of the dark vampiric overlord of chaos and death: Balaur.

Lead singer Tomas (all surnames are withheld due to legal reasons) is one of black metal’s most infamous, yet secretive, personalities. Having burned down two churches (a centuries-old wooden stave church in Øksfjord, Norway, and a fortified church listed as a heritage site in Transylvania, Romania) Tomas has been imprisoned for arson, and has also been arrested twice on murder charges – though, in both cases, he was released as a result of insufficient evidence.

The band members all knew each other as children – they all hail from the small town of Øksfjord in the very far north of Norway, inside the Arctic Circle. Even as teenagers, those who knew them said there was trouble ahead, and so there was: trouble at school, at home, with the police; it was an endless litany of turmoil. One notable incident involving Markus (bass guitar) resulted in him being detained in a juvenile prison, having been caught digging up graves and allegedly attempting acts of necrophilia with the corpses. He was fifteen at the time.

As they grew older, the band members moved away from Øksfjord one by one, and played in an assortment of separate bands, all of which came to nothing – each of them feeling that their new bandmates simply showed no real wish to be truly occult and evil. They had not seen each other for some time when a fateful chance meeting at the legendary Helvete record shop in Oslo brought them back together. It would appear that destiny once again drew these dark souls to one another, for a shadowy purpose.

This group of musicians ignored the rest of those who frequented Helvete – a gathering place and center of nefarious activity for all those involved in black metal’s inner circle in its early days. They had no interest in forging alliances with others, instead keeping themselves apart and sitting in each other’s company without uttering a word, until eventually Lars broke the deathlike silence between them, inviting Tomas, Kristoffer and Markus to form a new band – a band that would reign supreme and write the history of black metal as it would be known around the world in years to come. A band that would provide the soundtrack to the death of humankind… A band that would serve their lord and master as no other could… A band that would be the ultimate incarnation of Black Metal in Hell itself!

They began rehearsing in earnest, and several demos were recorded – but none were ever officially released to a wider audience. These early years yielded such legendary recordings as: ‘To Summon Him’ (1993, unreleased, cassette only); ‘The Dark Lord Shall Rise’ (1995, unreleased, cassette only), ‘Bloodfrenzy’ (1996, ultra-rare 7″ single) and ‘The Equanimity Of Chaos’ (1999, unreleased, cassette only).

‘Bloodfrenzy’ is reputed to change hands for well over £1,000 on the underground collectors’ market, but the chances of a copy being offered for sale are unimaginably slim – the authorities have declared they will arrest anyone found with a copy in their possession, so it’s seldom that anyone has been known to publicly admit to owning what is probably the most controversial song ever recorded.

The band have, until now, only played to secretive gatherings of the followers of the cult of Balaur, a vampire whose legends permeate the darkest recesses of Romanian folklore and sorcery. No one knows the real name of this legendary Carpathian predator. Known as ‘Balaur’ (the Dragon) for his demonic ability to breathe fire, he existed for a relatively short period in 15th/16th century Europe, feared among mortals and vampires alike. His origin is a mystery lost in time, though his bloodline was clearly mixed with ‘something else’ – a scion of House Petrova, Balaur remained a wild animal scything across the battlefields of Europe completely out of control, even fighting alongside the ‘Great Impaler’ Vlad Tepes. He did as he pleased, upsetting the Petrovas’ schemes, until it fell to his blood-sister, Athena, to make the decision to murder him for the good of the family.

During his relatively short existence as a vampire, Balaur was a pure sociopath – a sensualist devoted only to satisfying his own whims. All he ever desired was to destroy the world, for no other reason than to hear its inhabitants scream. He was chaos, bloodlust and destruction incarnate: an (un)living reminder that life cannot be tamed and that control over the world is nothing but a comforting fantasy. As the scholars of his day put it: “He is the Dragon – the fire that knows nothing except how to burn.”

Following Balaur’s death at the hands of his sister, his loyal retainers retrieved a fragment of his body, which they revered as an unholy relic, dedicating themselves to finding a way of resurrecting him. This cult has endured for centuries, but has become a forgotten footnote in the occult history books – remembered only by the most dedicated acolytes.

The band’s live shows are rumored to have included occult rituals, mass orgies, extreme violence, and even human sacrifice – with the ultimate offering being made in an attempt to summon the undead. More of a Satanic ceremony than a live black metal performance, these ‘gigs’ have been highly secretive, in an attempt to avoid attention from the vampire hunting organization (themselves extremely enigmatic) known as ‘The Congregation’.

The band dropped out of public sight in the year 2000. Aside from each other, they had no close friends, so the rare reported sightings of the individual members are usually considered to be nothing more than urban legends. Rumors have persistently spread that they disappeared after traveling in the murky Transylvanian region of Romania – that they had been murdered, sacrificed at one of their own shows by competing followers of the vampire Balaur. The truth about what had become of SONS OF BALAUR, where they had disappeared to, or even if they still survived, remained a mystery… until now!

After an absence of fifteen years, during which no one outside of the most extreme Satanic circles has known anything that could be substantiated about their activities, the SONS OF BALAUR have returned from their self-imposed exile in the netherworld to release their debut full length album…

ROCK AND RULE

ROCK AND RULE

Rock and Rule is a post-apocalyptic animated movie that features the songs of such luminaries as Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry Cheap Trick and Maurice White from Earth Wind and Fire (none of which you will recognize) with a soundtrack by Patricia Cullen. A flop when it was released but found cult status in the years that followed. Sadly, it isn’t that good, the story has promise of a good rock movie because of scenes involving drug use, implied satan worship, mild sexuality, and some swearing but the characters seemed to be based on early TV cartoon animals.
While the music has dated it is still listenable not the same for the score which is loud, inappropriate in places and seems to exist just to fill in place that a song isn’t being sung.
The movie’s plot takes place after the Third World War in a future where humans have killed themselves off, and animals have evolved into humanoid-like creatures (a lot like Disney’s Beagle Boys if you need a reference) after being exposed to radiation from nuclear fallout. The protagonist is an older rocker-type Mick Jagger-ish supervillain-ish named Mok Swagger (go figure), simply referred to as Mok, Mok’s nickname is “The Magic Man,” and he’s apparently something of a music legend. Mok’s evil plans include the fact that his computers have deciphered an ancient Satanic code, which he uses to unlock a gateway to another dimension. He’s hoping to find the portal to Hell (or someplace like it), in order to go down there and then return with a fearsome demon-like dude from the netherworld who will him rule over the world,. All he needs is a special voice and sends his minions to talent quests all over the world.
The portal apparently will only become accessible to Mok when opened with something called the “Armageddon Key,” which turns the lock, so to speak, when specific musical chords are sung by the special voice — and this is the voice he’s been searching for, which leads him right at the beginning of the film to the end of his search, having returned to Ohmtown, the city of his origin. There he finds a cute mutant small town rock outfit called the Drats who are trying to hit it big despite lacking what most might say is something essential: talent.
Anyway , I’m not going to tell you what happens click the video and watch it for yourself.
As cartoon bands go, the Drats are up there with Josie and the Pussy Cats and the Groovy Ghoulies. Acceptable but ultimately bland.

Gore Fx

Recently, as I was walking along Dorset Square one Saturday morning on the my way to the cinema,  I passed an innocuous sandwich board sign. It sat on the path along with a couple of other similar signs and was there to promote a shop down one of the arcades that lead onto Dorset road. It wasn’t until I had a closer look and read it that I thought “That looks interesting”. Peering down into the arcade, the bright sunlight playing tricks on the eyes made it seem a lot darker than normal and all I could make out was a figure  about half way down. As I ventured down and as my eyes adjusted , closer inspection revealed a mannequin dressed as a zombie nurse reaching out with one flesh less skeletal arm and a mouth dripping with blood, around her neck was a sign stating: COME IN, WE’RE DEAD.

How could I resist.

I walked into a small shop space whose décor could only be described as early dungeon and the walls were adorned with all kinds of oddities: severed body parts, mounted heads and some recognizable icons from famous horror movies.

Danny Wale
Welcome to GORE FX. A shop full of all things macabre whether it be masks, statues or something to freak out unwanted visitors for your mantelpiece.
Proprietor and local resident Danny Wale opened Gore Fx just before Christmas 2015 after the demand of making and selling his creations from home became too much of a strain on his space and privacy and it has proven to be a successful decision. A massive fan of the horror genre Danny has always had the passion and skills to create his models and about nine years ago decided to explore doing it as something more than a hobby and six years ago started selling and hiring out pieces through a website. Totally self-taught Danny is a creator of some skill and produces all items himself. This includes design, sculpture, mold making for latex masks and statues as well as painting and finishing techniques. He will often be seen working on one of his creations behind the counter.

Most of Danny’s work begins with a sculpture either out of a special modelling clay called Clayette or the more common Wed Clay which very popular with all the major special effects houses in Hollywood. A piece may take Danny anywhere between three and twelve hours and each piece is as individual as a snowflake due to the variations in the handmade process and painting. A look around his shop will find it is filled with oddities that pay tribute to some of the more popular horror franchisee as well as collectable items such as body parts in jars, heads on plates or simply necklaces adorned with severed fingers.
Sample of some of the works hanging in the shop.
Danny also promotes his unique products at the popular culture conventions and has had his pieces used in movies as well as music videos and album covers. He also is often asked to commissions from private clients.
Many older readers might think who would be interested in this sort of morbidity, but horror has always been big business with directors like Lord of the Rings’ Peter Jackson and Spiderman’s Sam Raimi both getting their start in low budget “slasher” films. Zombies are big business with TVs the Walking Dead and movies like Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland and WWZ doing huge business. Did you know that nearly every major city in Australia has at least one Zombie walk where on a certain weekend up to five thousand fans dress up rather extravagant make up and clothes and stagger through the streets for fun? There is quite a subculture of horror fans that you’d be quite surprised how popular the genre and its related areas really are and have been for many years.
Having a unique shop like Gore Fx gives a break to the same old stores we expect to see around Boronia and brings people from outside the area to shop. It’s exciting to see something a little bit different and I dare you to have a look for yourself. You can visit Gore Fx most Saturdays at this point in time at Shop 10 AEC Arcade in Boronia or visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gorefx for updates. I double dare ya.
