HOMCOOKED COMICS FESTIVAL

HOMCOOKED COMICS FESTIVAL  Northcote Town Hall 28th august 2022

It’s a beautiful warm and sunny day, one that heralds the dawning Spring and after being bogged at a local market car park earlier in the day due to the constant rain that was most of August, it was lovely to experience what was to come. Warmer weather and less heavy clothing.

Today was also an exciting day as it was  the long awaited return of one of the few independant comic/zine conventions that had been organized since CoVid ruined everything.

Homecooked Comics Festival at the Northcote Town hall was a single day event, and judging by the quality of participants behind the tables, it was a stellar line up. A great swag of the comic community, with several country and interstate artists making the trip for the event. Besides a myriad of smaller ‘zine artists, there was the cream of the current crop of artists that are creating what is fast becoming a renaissance in Australian comics. Sitting behind the table were such talents as Dillion Naylor. Peter Lane. Dave Dye, Alan Rose, Gary Dellar, Nicholas Cleary, Rob (Spedsy) Lisle, Daniel Reed, Matt Kyme, Roger Stitson, Kieran Jack. Angie Spice, Darren Close and Peter Lawson. (Sorry to those I’ve neglected) There was one noticeable absence, as this must be the first time I’ve been to one of these shows and there wasn’t a SCAR presence. Both Antoinette Rydyr and Steve Carter were dearly missed.

Though every table was filled in the decent size hall. The attendance was a bit disappointing. It was great to catch up with those known and finally meet others whose work I admire, coming home with probably more books than I intended to do.

Congratulations on the burgeoning comics community for banding together on a one-day event that was only open for five hours. Which they did with enthusiasm and without the usual cosplay, special guests (?), and merchandise of the larger Cons, which are still very stale and getting more expensive.

Here are some photos of the day and though it’s hopefully on the way out, it was still apparent that CoVid is still a major concern for people with health issues.
